Ball Arena Digital Ecosystem

Ball Arena

Summary

To improve the customer experience, we were tasked with developing a digital ecosystem to improve multiple stages of the customer journey at Ball Arena. The website and mobile app allow users to explore events, manage their passes, access live event experiences, connect to company suites, order food, and even purchase merchandise. The WatchOS extension allows users to be notified of food orders, event schedules, arena directions, and QR passes for hands free scanning. To streamline the experience even further, digital kiosks will be placed around the arena to help guests with directions and locations, and at some food locations to help cut down on lines for ordering. Guests will also receive text messages to alert them when their food is ready.

App Design and Features

The app is available on IOS and Android devices, with consideration given to both design systems.

The IOS version features a bottom bar for navigation, and a flat design style.

The Android version features a hamburger menu for the main navigation, and tab navigation within the pages. Items are placed on cards to create more dimension, consistent with typical android designs.

For regular attendees to Ball Arena and even those going for a single event the mobile app enhances the experience. It allows the user to easily see upcoming events and filter by category. Users can favorite teams and artists to make for easy access to their events. The tickets are purchased directly through the app to ensure authenticity and simplify the process. No need to enter your information, as payment and info is already saved in the users profile. The tickets are then conveniently stored within the users dashboard.

Suite Management

Going back to our business market. We wanted to make it easier for them to manage their suites. Once reserving a suite, a dashboard is created for that organization. From the admin side, we make it easier for them to pass out tickets to their employees or clients by simply adding their email. The process can also be automated to automatically disburse tickets, so they dont go to waste. We also wanted to make it easy for admin to customize their food options within their suite. Employees can join their organizations suite and can request suite tickets for eligible events.

Improve user awareness

Dashboard

The dashboard makes it easy for users to keep track of their events and easily refer back to the details. It also adds a digital experience that appears during the live event exclusive to those on the app, adding more value to the event. Another way to improve the experience for the user was including a responsive map of the arena, so the user can easily find where they are and where they want to go. Decreasing the amount of time trying to find things, and more time enjoying them. The dashboard features a passbook, to eliminate users having to dig thru their email, or multiple different applications to find their tickets or parking passes etc. It also removes the worry of losing a physical ticket. Lastly, the addition of being able to connect to an organization makes it easier for the user to access benefits. By putting them all in one place the user can easily keep track of everything, and quickly pull them up for access or referring to details.

Interactive Signage - QR Codes

One of the QR experiences within the arena is aimed at returning costumers. We wanted to make it as easy as possible for the user to remember future events, and even buy tickets right then. The marketing signage around the arena will have a QR code that users can scan for each event that will open an event info page. From there, they can add the event to their calendar, view the location on a map, read more about the event, and even purchase the tickets via a link to the mobile app / or mobile web.

Merchandise

Continuing the theme of maximizing convenience and wait time, we wanted to bring merchandise stands digital as well. Users can easily see the options online and pick it up anytime before, during, or shortly after the event. This way they can ensure they don’t miss out on their size, while also not missing out on the event. Sometimes the merchandise stands are sporadically placed around the arena, so we wanted to make it easy for users to know exactly where they were by marking the stands on the arena map.

Food and Drinks

One of the main goals was maximizing the time the user was watching the event as opposed to standing in line. We included a food and drink section on the app so users could place orders on their phone and go pick it up when its ready, skipping the line. But on top of that, instead of walking around the arena to see the options, users can easily see the different choices and how long it would take to get their food. We also wanted to bring the convenience of hailing the hotdog guy to the digital experience. So users can order simple items and have them brought right to their seat, as the app already has the data of where you’re sitting.

WatchOS Experience

WatchOS Experience

The watch complication and app were designed to create even more convenience for the user. The designs were created with the idea that the user may have things in their hand. Most actions can be completed by Siri. It allows the user to order food, get event info, access their passes, and get directions to predefined destinations.

Below shows the possible large and small complications and the main app menu. The complications very slightly by the type of event that is happening, but all information is pulled from the event info page.

“Hotdogs!” In the 21st century

Trying to bring the experience of hailing the hotdog guy into the 21st century, users can quickly order and have items brought to their seat. Below is the food ordering flow, where the user can order exclusively thru Siri, or they can go to the express menu. If they bought food through the mobile app for pick up, the notifciation will also be sent to their watch, so that with the heptic notification, we can be sure they wn’t miss it in all of the excitement.

Stay on top of the schedule

The event info screens allow the user to easily keep up with the action while they may be walking around the arena. The pages look different if it is a sporting event versus a concert or show. Users can select when they want to be notified, at the beginning of halves, or right before their favorite song on a setlist is about to play.

This is to help make sure the user is where they need to be, and don’t miss anything that is important to them at the event.

These are the most common places that a user is trying to find, so we made them easy for the user to have directions in just one click, no need to type anything in. They can get a quick glimpse of where they need to go and keep moving.

Kiosks and Signage

Signage

We wanted to make it easier for users to remember where they parked and where their seat is, etc.

Throughout the arena, letter and number signage will be accompanied by a character graphic, to help the user associate and easily remember the information.

In the parking garage example it will display this information, and then fade to display and quick walking map to the arena. Making it as easy as possible for the user to navigate through the experience.

Kiosks

The kiosks were added for users that may not have the mobile app at the event. We wanted them to have the same convenience of skipping the line and ordering digitally. The visual menu was to simulate the user staring at the food behind the counter, with no prices to deter them from a purchase.

They can easily customize their order and pay. Their order number will be called out and they can also opt in to being notified via SMS.

The SMS notification was designed to notify the user when their food was ready. This is specifically a text notification as opposed to a push notifcation to ensure that users who may have app notifications turned off still know when their food is ready. In addition, we wanted to give those who ordered through the kiosk to have the same freedom of being able to walk away and then know when their food was ready.
